Johannesburg to Cape Town – The Home Stretch

It was time to head on home and it’s always beautiful to see how the Karoo suddenly turns into the lush, green Hex River Valley. These mountains are magnificent and I love the fact that the highway runs in between them. There’s no need to turn off or make a detour to see them. Just drive straight and you’ll find yourself on the Hex River Pass. This is where you wake up the kids and anyone else snoozing away and force them to admire the splendour. If you feel like adding one more stop, then the Veldskoen Farm stall is a great place for that last cup of coffee before heading through the Huguenot Tunnel and onward to Cape Town.

After three days on the road, I can safely say that the N1 is not the monotonous, never-ending stretch of road that I always thought it was. There are so many scenic places to stop and admire when you’re not trying to get from point A to point B in the quickest way possible. And a lot of the time you don’t even have to make an effort. Just replace that generic service station with one of these spots. You might spend an hour or two more to do it, but you’ll see so much more of our magnificent country.
