Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal – Drakensberg
Descending into Natal via Oliviershoek Pass is an experience to be savoured. The mighty Drakensberg as a backdrop, you can see for days. All that distance makes a man hungry, so we agreed, without much (any resistance) that we’d pop into Little Switzerland Hotel and Holiday Resort for a cappuccino and some scones – very Swiss. If you’re looking for a green and serene spot to disappear and relax (with fun activities of course) – here’s your guy.
The R74 led us past some interesting things heading down the valley toward the central berg. These reservoirs, situated in the middle of nowhere, have been artfully decorated by a crafty bunch. My bet is on them excited folk from the Amphitheatre Backpackers down the road. This hostel is so named for its clear view of the awesome mountain feature ahead – the famous and hugely impressive Drakensberg Amphitheatre. I hear the spot is quite a jol too ;)
After passing the Tugela Rapids (river fun), we entered one of my favourite towns in SA – Winterton. This mini Mecca is bustling, yet never fails to charm with that authentic, farmer town feel. Just outside of it, direction Dragon Peaks and Champagne Castle, all the sightseeing caught up with us again – we needed waffles, and The Waffle Hut does just that!
This place is cooking (heh)! When we enquired why, word on the street was that the ‘berg’ (Champagne Castle area) would be buzzing that day. With plenty activities, places to kip and girls in party mode (not necessarily in that order), we were firmly advised to make tracks that way. So we didn’t, and hit the N3 instead.
