Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal – Howick and the home stretch
With the night sky snuggly around us, and the views hidden from sight, it felt like a good time to celebrate. Earlier in the day we had been recommended the Yellowwood Café, a country restaurant overlooking the Howick falls. You can hear the water bellowing below, it’s energising, and was the perfect place to wrap up a good day’s exploring!
No hols barred, we popped the bubbly and ordered the wholesome, flavour-rich food on offer; roast lamb shank with mash, and fillet steak and wedges with avo and blue cheese sauce. Man, was that food delicious! We had ideas of heading deeper into KZN, toward the towns of Wartburg and Dalton. The German community there sure knows how to whip up an exceptional Eisbein (to be enjoyed with a fresh beer of course), but that road shall be left for another day too.
As fate would have it, an impromptu call to a good friend who, unbeknown to us, happened to be in town led us to the other restaurant we were recommended – this time for a solid laugh and some Mozambican beer. Eventually, curfew called – we had to be far away, in a short time. The plan, select the finest online beats we had and stream them through 3G while driving at 120kph – who said SA’s 3rd world?
The plan worked so well that we went sailing passed our turn, but that was cool, back roads in Umhlanga are a peach to explore at the worst of times. Aaah, the warm, salty, tropical air.
