Johannesburg to Cape Town – Beaufort West
My stop for the second night was this sleepy Karoo town. There might not be a lot to do, but the accommodation and the food are both perfect. I spent the night at the Cape Karoo Guesthouse, a charming four-star establishment. It was the manager that directed me to Ye Old Thatch for dinner. Note to self: Don’t ever rely on Google for a good place to eat in a small town, always ask the locals.
Ye Old Thatch sits along the main road (Donkin Street), just across the street from the BP garage and it’s the best place to fill up on Karoo lamb. The portion sizes are big and the wine is good. The courtyard is beautiful, with seats under a massive tree. Just ask the owner for some mosquito repellent.
