South Africa is such a beautiful country to explore and one of the best ways to take it all in is on a road trip. There are many well-known holiday routes to take – like the one from Johannesburg to Cape Town, or the Panorama Route through the Blyde River Canyon and of course, the Garden Route.
However, if you are prepared to deviate from the more popular routes, you will find some hidden gems full of history, culture and beauty. So, what should you add to your road trip bucket list in 2019? Here are some of our suggestions:
- Kruger National Park to St Lucia – from bush to sea this route not only allows you to enjoy game sightings, including the Big 5 but you will travel through the mountains to Sodwana Bay and finally stop at St Lucia. Don’t forget to look out for the hippos!
- Pretoria to Swaziland – a long but interesting drive with beautiful views, waterfalls and nature reserves. It’s also a route filled with culture and a great opportunity to visit our neighbours. Swaziland is also home to several craft markets and shopping attractions. Don’t forget to visit Ngwenya Glass, which is regarded as Africa’s most prestigious glass factory.
- Clarens to Moolmanshoek Private Game Reserve – from Golden Gate National Park through to Ficksburg for some cherry picking, this route offers a host of activities – everything from mountain biking, eco-trails, birdwatching and so much more.
- Tsitsikamma to Port Alfred – this stretch is said to get more hours of sunlight than the rest of South Africa, hence the nickname ‘sunshine coast’. With some unspoilt spots just off the main road, this is a scenic coastal route.
Road trips are an amazing way to see the country. Not only are they often more convenient than air travel and offer better bang for your buck, but they also offer great adventure done in your own time and based on your own preferences.
