Fuel-Saving Myths Debunked

Fuel keeps going up, your salary… not so much. While South Africans are doing the mental maths at the pump, a lot of “fuel-saving hacks” are sliding into chats, group texts and family braais. Everyone seems to have an uncle who “knows a trick”.

At Beame, we love a good life hack – but not the kind that can wreck your car or make your drive more dangerous. So in this second part of our blog series, we bust a few fuel myths and show you what actually helps you save on petrol.

For part 1 of this series, head over to the Matrix website.

Myth 4: “Let your car idle for ages to ‘warm up’ and save fuel later”

The hack: Start the car, let it idle while you make coffee, pack the kids’ lunch, check Instagram, and only then drive. The engine is “nice and warm”, so it must use less fuel on the road, right?

Reality check: Modern engines don’t need long idling sessions to warm up. Idling = fuel burned, distance = zero. Your engine actually warms up best when you start driving gently, not when it’s standing still rehearsing for a statue competition.

Do this instead:

  • Start the car, wait a few seconds, then drive off calmly.
  • Keep revs moderate while the engine warms up over the first few kilometres.
  • If you’re parked for more than a minute and it’s safe, switch off rather than idling.

Think “warm up on the move”, not “waste fuel in the driveway”.

Myth 5: “Premium fuel will magically fix your fuel bill”

The hack: “My friend switched to the more expensive fuel and now his car basically sips petrol”. Tempting, especially when the pump price hurts.

Reality check: If your car doesn’t specifically require higher‑octane fuel, using the expensive stuff is unlikely to give you a big jump in fuel economy. You might see small differences in how the engine feels in some cases, but for most everyday commuters, the real savings come from how you drive and maintain your car, not what label is on the pump.

Do this instead:

  • Use the fuel grade recommended in your owner’s manual.
  • Put the extra cents per litre into proper maintenance or savings instead.
  • If you’re curious, compare a few tanks of different fuels – but keep your routes and driving style similar before declaring a “winner”.

Premium habits > premium fuel.

Myth 6: “The slower you go, the more you save”

The hack: Cruise way under the speed limit everywhere. Everyone can hoot and pass you, but you’re “saving fuel”, so it’s fine.

Reality check: Driving like you’re permanently stuck behind a tractor is not the answer. Every car has a rough “sweet spot” where it’s most efficient – usually a steady, moderate speed in the right gear. Driving too slowly in the wrong gear, or constantly speeding up and slowing down, can actually waste fuel and frustrate other drivers.

Do this instead:

  • Aim for a smooth, steady speed that matches traffic and the legal limit.
  • Use higher gears when appropriate so your revs are in a comfortable, efficient range.
  • Cut out harsh overtaking and constant lane‑swapping – it’s bad for fuel and blood pressure.

Save fuel, not by becoming a moving roadblock, but by being the smooth, predictable driver everyone wishes they were.

So… what actually helps your fuel bill?

Here’s the not‑so‑secret recipe most experts agree on:

  • Drive smoothly – gentle acceleration and braking.
  • Keep tyres at the correct pressure, not “extra hard”.
  • Avoid unnecessary idling and plan routes to dodge the worst traffic where you can.
  • Service your car on time; a healthy engine uses less fuel.
  • Lighten the load – clear out the boot and take off roof racks when you’re not using them.

No drama, no hacks – just small changes that can stack up to real savings over a month.

And while Beame can’t stop fuel prices from going up, we can help keep your car and moveable assets safe while you’re out there chasing every last kilometre.

Because nothing kills your fuel budget faster than a car that’s gone missing.
